Measurement discipline

  1. Calibrate with an appropriate reference weight.
  2. Use a stable, level, draft-free surface.
  3. Remove holders and loose debris without cleaning the coin.
  4. Take at least three readings.
  5. Check official specifications for the exact date and composition.
  6. Use diameter, thickness, edge and composition evidence too.

A worn silver coin can be light. A dirty coin can be heavy. A plated coin can look like a wrong metal. A cheap scale can drift enough to create a false transitional-error claim.
